The Vistula river in Warsaw is an important element of creating the image of the region and the development of local inland tourism.
Since the beginning of its existence, Warsaw has been linked with the Vistula River. It is the Queen of Polish Rivers that has been, and still is, the main source of water for the city's inhabitants, enabling its development.

Warsaw is one of two cities in the world that has an unregulated shoreline in its center. Such a shoreline helps to conserve the natural environment of many plant and animal spicies and contributes to biodiversity.
A large part of Vistula landscape is a breeding zone for endangered bird species.

In addition to its natural values, the river also performs key functions for the city's water management. Its riverbed is designed to transport all types of water (low, medium and high), receive surface run-off (sewage) and serves as a source of water for agricultural, industrial and municipal purposes. Consequently, urban infrastructure is being developed to treat, filter and purify the river's waters.
In order to solve the problem of sewage in the Vistula, municipal treatment plants were established, such as the "Południe" treatment plant built in 2006 and the "Czajka" treatment plant modernised in 2010. There is also water treatment plant "Praga".

The Vistula River and the Zegrze Lake are our two independent natural sources from which we draw water for Warsaw. They cover approximately 99% of water demand.

A kind of city within a city has emerged along the Vistula, which is a centre for cultural and music events, festivals, cyclical events, food fairs and all kinds of fun and games for children. The large number of restaurants and cafes, which can be visited after a cruise on a passenger ship or barge, attracts a huge number of tourists and Warsaw residents.
