The second edition of the MMT Summer School in Poznań is intended for economics students, PhD students, practitioners and early-career researchers interested in the Modern Monetary Theory. We provide an international learning environment for those interested in deepening their knowledge of the modern money: its origins, the notion of tax-driven money, inflation, modeling MMT’s price theory, and the MMT-based policy proposals, such as Job Guarantee and Green New Deal. The School is a hybrid event that features mostly in-person lectures, a special event as well as two online lectures.

Over five days, participants will have an opportunity of attending lectures, presenting their views and ideas, as well as discussing them with highly competent faculty. They will also take part in the special event that focuses on the climate crisis and how we can pay for a Green New Deal from the MMT perspective.

The participants will also improve their critical thinking and analytical skills by attending lectures on modeling economic cycles, complexity and MMT in Minsky.

What is MMT?

The rising popularity of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) is both intellectually and politically exciting phenomenon that has greatly changed the economic thinking over recent years. Some time ago, it was an obscure idea only a bunch of heterodox economists and a few academic articles and books talked about. Today, it has captured the imagination of many, including politicians, central bankers, policymakers, journalists, publicists, bloggers, activists, and a rising number of new generation of economists. MMT proponents see the theory not only as the actual description of the current fiat money system, but also as a tool that enables us to deal with rising social inequalities, labour market problems and the climate crisis. As such, MMT is also a theoretical vindication of the importance of active role of the state and the use of its fiscal policy to deliver better economic and social outcomes for everyone. MMT economists argue that fiscal policy is the most important tool to achieve full employment (i.e. keeping up demand) and economic growth, while, at the same time, helping to revitalize the public institutions, politics and democracies.

In order to meet the growing need of the general public to learn the principles and somewhat more advanced concepts behind the Modern Monetary Theory, Edward Lipiński Foundation and Heterodox Publishing House have decided to launch the 2nd edition of MMT Summer School in Poznań.

Modern Monetary Theory Summer School in Poznań is the first of its kind MMT event in Europe. The School’s lecturers include, among others, Professor L. Randall Wray – one of the founders of MMT.
